Digging deep into websites

03 Mar, 2014

We may sift through different rants on online forums about do's and don'ts of a website; what should be included, how it should be presented and what should be avoided. All the tips and tricks may also seemingly apply on ecommerce and business related websites.

However a website's sole purpose is to reach out to as many viewers as possible while at the same time, keeping the viewers engaged. Even in making a fraudulent website, one may adhere to the guidelines and tricks to make a website look professional. One must be aware of different types of websites out there for their viewers.

  • Sites that fall under "Web based sales" sell their products online. These kinds of businesses don't usually have a fixed location. They emphasize on their effective and safe online billing, making the interface look trustworthy to their clients to pitch up the sales.
  • There are stores that offer products and services in bulk (wholesale or retail). Their websites have authentic interface along with their contact details and company profile.
  • There are business websites that generate buzz words of a new business and emphasize on grabbing as many viewers as possible for their business through their websites. These websites usually have flashing, attention grabbing images and animations.
  • There are websites that give market awareness or information about a particular product and service. Such websites are solely for informing and offer no online service. The interface is made to emphasize on the product attributes.
  • Websites like Britannica, Wikipedia and IMDB are there for information and entertainment. These websites have no covert missions or agenda and the information is shared just for the sake of sharing.
  • Websites can also be persuasive or influential. NGO websites supporting a particular cause can fall under such category.
  • Personal blogs and online diaries are a separate category itself. Of course there is freedom of expression and everyone gets to share what they had for breakfast, or how their day was.
  • Social networking platforms will need thorough planning and execution. These websites can be classified under Web 2.0 (Web 2.0 is a broad category. Their purpose is usually effective data storage, communication, etc. These can vary according to the website objectives.)

Before sitting down with a web design company to chart down different pages of a website, one should know under what category does its website fall under? What is more important is that a web design firm understands its client's business requirement and designs their website according.
